Two Beer Categories in Less than a Beer Amount of Time

1 min read

The two main categories of beers are Lagers and Ales.

All you gotta know scientifically is that during the brewing process:

Lager style beers will have yeast that ferments at lower temperatures at the bottom.
Ale style beers will have yeast that ferments at higher temperatures and at the top.

All you gotta know socially is that Lagers are the most boring, but reliable of styles, as they simply don’t have a lot of variety. Well known lagers include Pilsners, Budweisar, Heineken, and various Mexican beers.

Craft beers are generally going to be ales, as they have an infinite amount of opportunity for different styles, flavors, hybrids, more. This means they can be completely amazing or total garbage. The list of popular ales includes:

  • Brown Ales
  • Pale Ales
  • India Pale Ales (IPA)
  • Porters
  • Stouts
  • Belgian Style Beers
  • Wheat Beers
  • Sours

A Spicy Pumpkin Coffee Stout and a Raspberry Tart Sour both ferment with yeast at the top – they are both ales.

A Corona, Budweiser, Coors and a German Pilsner ferment with yeast at the bottom – they are lagers.
